VPOP3 Email Server for Windows
VPOP3 and Sophos Anti-Virus
From VPOP3 1.4.1 onwards, VPOP3 has integrated support
to work with Sophos Anti-Virus to scan incoming and outgoing
messages for viruses when running on Windows NT, Windows
2000 or Windows XP.
Sophos Anti-Virus is a world-class virus solution designed for businesses and networks. As such, it is
designed to be centrally administered and maintained with updated versions of the virus scanning engine being
delivered on CD by post monthly, and virus definition updates are downloadable from the 'net as soon as
new viruses appear. Sophos also provide 24 hour technical support, 365 days a year, included in the
licence cost.
For more details see the
Sophos website.
A 30 day evaluation download of Sophos Anti-Virus is available at
http://www.sophos.com/downloads/products/
You can buy Sophos in two different ways to use with VPOP3:
- The SAV Interface version which will only work with VPOP3 (and other SAV Interface aware applications).
This now runs on all versions of Windows, and contains the API which VPOP3 uses to scan for viruses. This
solution is suitable if you already have a network virus scanning system in place.
- The Full version which contains SAV Interface and also runs on your
network workstations and servers to scan for viruses entering the network in other ways.
This solution is recommended if you do not have a network virus scanning system already in place. The
virus scanning runs on any type of workstation (Windows 95, 98, NT, 2000, ME, XP, 2003, OS/2, Unix etc), but
VPOP3 must be running on a 32 bit Windows computer to take advantage of the virus scanning integration facility.
Pricing for Sophos Anti-Virus is available here (for SAV Interface),
and here (for the Full version).
(Licences for other network sizes are available, we have only listed the most common ones for usage with VPOP3)
Using Sophos with VPOP3
The Sophos integration is enabled by simply ticking the checkbox in the Misc ->
Attachment Processing window in VPOP3 settings. You can customise the behaviour further by using
the other settings on that window (eg informing the sender or administrator if a virus is found etc).
Automatically updating Sophos virus definitions
As of VPOP3 1.4.7 beta VPOP3 is capable of automatically updating the sophos virus definition
files ('IDE' files) when running on Windows NT/2000/XP/2003. You will still need to update the
virus engine manually when you receive the monthly CDs from Sophos.
New Sophos licences include Sophos Enterprise Manager which will automatically download virus
definition AND virus engine updates when run on Windows NT/2000/XP/2003
