Services Page

VPOP3 contains several different server components. The Services  page lets you specify which of these server components you wish to run, and some configuration details about these servers.

VPOP3 can run up to 8 different TCP/IP services:

  1. POP3 server
This is a key component of VPOP3. It is this service which allows email client software to retrieve email. You can set the POP3 server settings by clicking on POP3 in the submenu or the services list.

  2. SMTP server
This is another key component of VPOP3. It is this service which allows email client software to send email, as well as allowing incoming SMTP mail. You can set SMTP server settings by clicking on SMTP in the submenu or the services list.

  3.  IMAP4 Server
    This is an
IMAP4 protocol mail server for reading email. You can set IMAP4 server settings by clicking on IMAP4 in the submenu or the services list. Note that IMAP4 support is only available in the VPOP3 Enterprise edition, not VPOP3 Standard!

  4. Password server
This is a simple service which allows users to change their password settings (either manually through ‘Telnet’ or by using a compatible email client such as Eudora), You can set  Password Server settings by clicking on Password in the submenu or the services list.

  5. Finger server
    Finger
is a simple protocol used for finding out basic details about a person. It is possible to use this service to see if there is email waiting for a user. You can set Finger Server settings by clicking on Finger in the submenu or the services list.

  6. LDAP server
    LDAP
(Lightweight Directory Access Protocol) is a method of having a centralised address book/directory. VPOP3 contains an LDAP server which can supply email addresses and other details for VPOP3 users as well as other people. See your email client documentation for how to access LDAP directories. You can set LDAP server settings by clicking on LDAP in the submenu or the services list.

  7.  Web Mail/Admin server
This service lets users read & send email, and runs the configuration web server for VPOP3. You can set Web Mail/Admin server settings by clicking on
Web Mail/Admin in the submenu or the services list.

  8. Remote Status server
This service allows the remote status monitor program to communicate with VPOP3 to allow server monitoring and control over the network. You can set Remote Status server settings by clicking on Remote Status in the submenu or the services list.

The Password, Finger, LDAP, IMAP4  services can be disabled if desired (the other services cannot, because they are necessary for the proper functioning of VPOP3).

The Port settings allow you to set the TCP/IP port which each of these services operates on. If you do not understand this, then just leave the settings at their defaults as they will be correct unless you are doing something unusual. The Defaults button will set the port settings back to their defaults in case they are incorrectly set.

IP Address to Bind to

The IP Address to Bind to setting allows you to specify which network interfaces you wish to allow the services to operate on. This means you specify the IP address of the ‘adapter’ which you want to allow incoming connections on.

If you are running a PC with both a LAN adapter and a ‘Dial-up Networking Adapter’, each of these adapters will have a different IP address. If you want to limit connections to a single adapter, then enter the IP address of that adapter. If you don't mind, then choose <Any>.

The most common use of this facility is to prevent access to VPOP3 from the Internet over the dial-up connection. In this case, simply choose the IP address of your PC on the LAN in the IP Address to Bind to boxes.

Note that the recommended way of limiting incoming connections is now to use IP address restrictions as described here.

The Set the Same button tells VPOP3 that you want to allow access to all the servers from the same adapter. This is the normal option.

The Available Addresses list shows the IP addresses which VPOP3 can detect as being available on local network adapters. You can select one of these and press the Set button to assign that IP address to one of the IP Address to Bind to options. You can also type directly into the IP Address to Bind to boxes in case the Available Addresses list is incorrect.
